India pwned the Oscars

Regardless of what I thought of Slumdog Millionaire I was extremely thrilled that a movie made in Mumbai (even though it was made by Brits) bagged so many Oscars, including Best Picture.

Furthermore, for A. R. Rahman to receive two of them, finally.

Also seeing Bollywood dancing invading the stage at the Oscars was something.

Slumdog Millionaire was an excellent picture in many regards. Unfortunately it failed in one major aspect - acting. The performances were nowhere up to par with the quality of the rest of the movie. Everything from the fake Indian tinge to the actor's accents to simply lackluster moments when you just don't feel it coming across.

I will admit that the cinematography and score were top-notch, no bollywood film has managed to achieve this level of artistic depiction of a city so (attempted to be) often immortalized in film. However, I feel The Dark Knight (or the other nominees) deserved it even more, for reasons I'm sure you already know.

Direction, I think that could have gone elsewhere too.

Part of why Slumdog had such a large haul is because this is the first time Western culture is being exposed to an Indian film (made in India, that is) executed right. Its as simple as that. And I don't blame them. India has always appeared extremely fascinating to Westerners, and a film based there is no exception, especially when done right, as was the case.

The Oscars were more fun to watch than I thought. By no means am I an obsessive movie buff of sorts but I (hope that) I know what works and what doesn't.

India pwned the Oscars.
