New Times

Recently I realized that quite a number of things are changing around here. Some of them for the better, some for the worse.

Like, the new Pepsi logo, and the Tropicana packaging.

Most people despise the updates, because we're throwing away such classic and timeless designs that have become such a deep-rooted part of daily life, and society.

There's also the new Simpsons intro. (Its also in HD now)

The show has kept the same unforgettable intro since 1989. When it was changed to the new one, many people felt that it was almost a crime to change something that has indeed become such an integral part of the show.

Personally, I don't mind any of the above three, or any of the other new stuff coming around the corner. Sure, we're killing classics, but how long can classics really survive? I'm sure Pepsi's logo could have survived indefinitely, but doesn't that mean we're putting a halt on the creative progression of a brand's image? Pepsi's new logo (somewhat) adapts to modern design trends (even though they don't have to, and personally I don't like the new typeface). Giving a brand a fresh new look doesn't mean it's killing its old heritage, it's simply a reinvention, a reinvigoration of the brand for a new century. Coca Cola has done similar, but subtler, by incorporating a simple Coke in some of their ads, and emphasizing the red-white color scheme in an increasingly simplistic manner.

Sure I'll miss the old Simpsons intro, but its wonderful for the creators to take the plunge and try their hand at creating a new intro worthy of the immense legacy the show possesses. Its nice to see them flex their creative genius and try to spin out something different and take the show in a new direction by creating it in HD (although The Simpsons isn't funny anymore I'd say)

It isn't like they're changing they're animation style. That, quite obviously, would be too radical a departure for comfort. And I personally think the newer intro is far better, as an intro, disregarding the mark the previous one left. If the new one was the original intro, and was replaced today by the older one, we'd all be asking them to revert it. We've seen the old one so many times that we might feel alienated without it, and that's alright, but accept that the change was for the better.

The word 'change' has become so overused and cliche thanks to our good friend Obama. We'll have to start using oddities like 'modify' and 'reshape' now.
